 Apple Picking Day

September 16th 2017

It’s that time of the year again and the apple trees are full of fruit which needs picking.  Friends of Natures World are holding their annual apple picking day on Saturday 16th September at Middlesbrough Environment City Offices.

The apple orchard in the grounds of the old Natures World site on Sandy Flatts Lane, Acklam will be open to the public from Noon till 4.00pm and the event is free!

Why not come along and pick a bag of apples of various types, try “Apple Bobbing” and take part in the craft stalls.

Apples are one of the easiest fruit to pick and use.  They’re big, not easily bruised, most varieties store well, they can be eaten fresh, cooked, canned, frozen and made into many tasty and healthy dishes. Apples are fat-free, low sodium, and cholesterol-free.

We partnered with the Friends of Nature’s World for the annual Apple Day event, held at the Community Patchwork Orchard in October half term.

Over 100 people came for a visit and helped pick and press apples, made bird feeders and shared their stories of the orchard over a glass of juice.  Some people took apples home, and some were donated to the Mary Thompson Fund to feed some of Middlesbrough’s most vulnerable residents with free, healthy food.

The Friends are joining us once again on January 6th for a wassailing celebration in the orchard, to rid it of evil spirits and ensure a good harvest in 2017!  Join us if you can.
