Welcome to the web site of Middlesbrough Environment City (MEC). We are a locally based charity - one of only four environment cities in England. The aim of Environment Cities is to demonstrate ways of managing cities and large towns in more sustainable ways - promoting the environment alongside economic regeneration and social needs. Middlesbrough, as a town, has many challenges but also many opportunities. We have seen many improvements in our environment in recent years, most notably the cleaning up of the River Tees – where salmon and seals can be seen once more. However, much more remains to be done.

At MEC we believe in both partnerships and grass roots action to bring about environmental improvements and benefits and as you look through our web site you will find plenty of evidence of both. MEC leads on Local Agenda 21, on behalf of Middlesbrough Council, and this unique ‘bottom up’ approach to sustainable development provides opportunities for all to be involved in improving quality of life across the town. We are also, of course, always looking to forge new partnerships and identify new projects – so I would encourage you to contact us to discuss any ideas you may have. I hope that you will be inspired by our web site and that it will encourage you to take action for our shared environment – protecting it for our future generations.
