Health Translink

As part of the Healthy Living in Middlesbrough Initiative, the Health Translink project provides minibus transport for residents of the most disadvantaged areas of Middlesbrough, to enable them to access health related activities both within the town and beyond.

Translink has provided transport for schools to access gym sessions, enabled community/youth groups to take part in confidence and team building events and has also helped residents groups, health centres, Men’s Health and BME Men’s Health Projects to gain access to areas of Middlesbrough, Teesside and wider countryside to take part in guided walks and other walking and health related initiatives.

By providing transport to these groups, Translink has enabled individuals and groups to access a range of new events and places that they would not normally be able to access. The project also runs training courses and supports community members in achieving MIDAS certification, helping groups to become more self-sufficient through developing a pool of safe, confident minibus drivers. During 2005, 25 groups benefited from the service, with 20 people trained as MIDAS accredited drivers.

Berwick Hills Allotments

The former Berwick Hills Allotment Site has been transformed through Middlesbrough Council’s Wildspace! Project, creating a Local Nature Reserve with areas of wetland, wildflower grassland and hedgerows. Local schools are also working with The Tees Forest to grow vegetables on some of the remaining allotment plots. Middlesbrough Environment City has been supporting the project through running guided cycle rides and walks around the allotments, running a community composting scheme and increasing awareness of the site amongst the local community.
