Fairtrade is an international campaign that ensures that producers in the developing world receive a fair price for their goods.  It also supports health and community projects in producers' communities.   Middlesbrough became a Fairtrade Town in March 2007.  Fairtrade in Middlesbrough is co-ordinated by a partnership of organisations on the Middlesbrough Fairtrade Group.

The group now has its own website that includes more information on Fairtrade in Middlesbroughvisit  www.fairtrademiddlesbrough.co.uk

Fairtrade Fortnight is the main event in the Fairtrade calendar and takes place in March each year. The theme for this year was 'Show Your Label'.  Participants were  asked to decorate a piece of Fairtrade Cotton Bunting and also encouraged to think of inventive ways in which to show off the Fairtrade label. Several Middlesbrough schools took part in Fairtrade cookery sessions. Fairtrade products were used and the concept of Fairtrade was discussed at length.

Teesside University Students’ Union promoted Fairtrade in a variety of ways with a promotional stand offering information and samples.  Three raffles were held and the prize at each draw was a hamper filled with Fairtrade products.  Fairtrade was promoted at the local 'Green Market' which is held annually in Middlesbrough Town Centre during Fairtrade Fortnight and continues to be promoted in schools and at locally held events.
